Sugary Cove Beach Beaches

Sugary Cove is a quiet shingle and rock beach on the coast just south of Dartmouth Castle, owned by Dartmouth Town Council. It is reached along a winding, uneven stretch of coast path from the castle and then 70 steep concrete steps, so there is no step-free access; the castle area above has a small car park, tea rooms, toilets and a ferry to Dartmouth quay.

Full dog policy and source

South Hams District Council applies seasonal dog exclusions to a named list of beaches between 1 May and 30 September, and this beach is not on it, so dogs are welcome here all year with no seasonal closure and no blanket lead requirement. The restricted beaches are Salcombe South Sands, closed on a 24-hour basis except for dogs on a lead crossing the sand to board the South Sands Ferry; Mouthwell Sands at Hope Cove, closed between 10am and 7pm; Challaborough; Bigbury and Bantham, both partial closures; Blackpool Sands; Mothecombe; Wembury; and Bovisand Sandy Parlour. Away from those, the council position is that most beaches welcome well-controlled dogs all year. Blackpool Sands is the closest restricted beach to here, so check before heading along the coast in season. SAFETY: this is the Dart estuary rather than open coast - the water is deep close in, there is boat traffic through the narrows, and the access path is steep. Keep your dog in sight if it swims.
