Birdoswald Roman Fort sits on a ridge above the River Irthing on Hadrian's Wall in Cumbria. Outside the fort runs the longest continuous stretch of the Wall still visible today, and remains include the fort's gates, granaries and traces of the first Wall, built of turf. Displays explain how and why the Wall was built, and a 16th-century bastle house recalls later border raids.
English Heritage says: Dogs on a lead allowed outside.
