Dartmouth Castle stands on a promontory where the River Dart meets the English Channel in south Devon. It was begun in 1388 to protect the town and harbour against French raids, and a century later was strengthened with a gun tower, the first purpose-built coastal artillery fort in Britain. Displays trace its story to the Second World War, including an audio and light show of a gun crew.
English Heritage lists this site among its dog-friendly places. Its published guidance asks visitors to keep dogs on a lead in fields with livestock and to clean up after them. English Heritage does not publish a site-specific lead policy here, so check signage on arrival.
