Denbigh Castle stands on Castle Hill above the town of Denbigh, with long stretches of the medieval town walls nearby. Begun after Edward I's forces took the stronghold of Dafydd ap Gruffudd in 1282, it is known for its imposing gatehouse, high curtain walls and a sally port that let defenders slip out. An exhibition inside tells its story.

Only assistance dogs trained by Assistance Dogs UK or a member organisation, and police search dogs, may go up to the UPPER LEVELS - so the climb up a castle tower, which is often the reason for the visit, is not something you can do with a dog unless someone waits below. SHORT LEAD AT ALL TIMES, under control, and clean up after them. Site staff can and do refuse entry to a dog that is not under control. A few Cadw sites admit assistance dogs only, to protect delicate interiors - this is not one of them.
