Dover Castle stands on Castle Hill above the town of Dover in Kent. Its Great Tower was built by Henry II between 1180 and 1189, and the site also has a Roman lighthouse, one of only three to survive from the Roman Empire, beside the church of St Mary in Castro. Beneath the castle, secret wartime tunnels served as the headquarters from which the Dunkirk evacuation was planned in 1940.
