Remote Gwynedd fortress built by Llywelyn the Great; dogs on short leads allowed across the open ruins.
Cadw welcome dogs at most of their castles, abbeys and historic houses, and this one is on their published dog-friendly list. THE RULE THAT CATCHES PEOPLE OUT IS THE GROUND FLOOR ONE: dogs get the grounds and the GROUND FLOORS ONLY. Only assistance dogs trained by Assistance Dogs UK or a member organisation, and police search dogs, may go up to the UPPER LEVELS - so the climb up a castle tower, which is often the reason for the visit, is not something you can do with a dog unless someone waits below. SHORT LEAD AT ALL TIMES, under control, and clean up after them. Site staff can and do refuse entry to a dog that is not under control. A few Cadw sites admit assistance dogs only, to protect delicate interiors - this is not one of them.
