Culloden Battlefield, 5 miles east of Inverness, is the site of the 1746 battle that ended the final Jacobite Rising. The visitor centre has a museum telling the story from both sides, a 360-degree battle immersion theatre and a roof garden, and the battlefield includes the restored 18th-century Leanach Cottage.
The National Trust for Scotland welcome dogs at many of their places, but this is a GROUNDS-ONLY welcome and the exclusions are broad. Dogs cannot go into BUILDINGS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC, WALLED GARDENS, PLAY AREAS, MOST CAFES AND RESTAURANTS, or SHOPS - assistance dogs excepted throughout. So the estate, the woodland and the wider grounds are yours; the castle, the tea room and the gift shop are not. NTS ask you to CHECK WITH STAFF AT THE PROPERTY if you are unsure, which is worth doing here rather than at most places, because the line falls in a different spot at each one. WHERE THERE IS LIVESTOCK dogs must be on a SHORT LEAD or under close control, and the Scottish Outdoor Access Code applies. Clean up after them. One perk if you are a member: dog-friendly NTS places give PAW POWER STAMPS for the member passport.
