Kenilworth Castle in Warwickshire has a history spanning more than nine centuries, from its Norman keep of the 1120s to the siege of 1266, one of the longest in medieval England. In 1563 Elizabeth I granted it to Robert Dudley, who turned it into a showpiece palace. Visitors can climb to the queen's apartments and explore the garden Dudley created for her 1575 visit, with its aviary and fountain.
