Pevensey Castle on the East Sussex coast began as the largest of the Roman 'Saxon Shore' forts in about AD 290, and its walls, over 500 metres long, still stand almost to full height. William the Conqueror landed here in 1066 and built a fortress within the Roman defences. Displays cover sieges and royal prisoners, and the castle was brought back into use in 1940 with camouflaged machine gun posts.
