Portland Castle was built in 1539-40 on the orders of Henry VIII as one of two artillery forts defending the anchorage of Portland Roads on the Dorset coast. Its squat, rounded seaward front was designed to deflect cannon shot, and it served as a coastal defence until 1816. Visitors can see the Tudor kitchen, armoury and gun decks, and the sheltered Governor's Garden overlooks the sea and harbour.
English Heritage says: Dogs are welcome in the grounds of Portland Castle, including the castle, the beach, the shop and the lower section of the tea room. Please note that dogs must be kept on a short lead at all times.
