Tintagel Castle stands partly on the mainland and partly on a rugged island on the north Cornish coast. Between the 5th and 7th centuries the island fortress was a stronghold of Cornish rulers, and in the 12th century Geoffrey of Monmouth wrote that King Arthur was conceived here. Visitors cross a footbridge to the island, see the Gallos sculpture and, at low tide, can explore Merlin's Cave.
English Heritage says: Dogs are welcome at Tintagel Castle, but please note there are lots of steps, cliff edges and nesting birds, so please keep them safe on leads.
