Tynemouth Priory and Castle occupies a steep-sided headland commanding the entrance to the river Tyne, with sea views all round. The remains of a medieval priory, once protected like a castle by walls, towers and a gatehouse, dominate the site, which became a coastal fortress after Henry VIII suppressed the monastery and remained one until 1956. Visitors enter through the 14th-century gatehouse and can explore interactive displays across the headland.
English Heritage lists this site among its dog-friendly places. Its published guidance asks visitors to keep dogs on a lead in fields with livestock and to clean up after them. English Heritage does not publish a site-specific lead policy here, so check signage on arrival.
