Chirk Castle, near Wrexham, was begun in 1295 by Marcher Lord Roger Mortimer as one of Edward I's fortresses on the Welsh border. From 1595 it was home to the Myddelton family for over 400 years, who adapted the stronghold for domestic life. Visitors can see the castle, 5.5 acres of award-winning garden with clipped yews, and a 480-acre estate with veteran trees and part of Offa's Dyke.
Chirk Castle has a two pawprint rating, with water bowls, dog bins and three marked estate trails. Dogs must be kept on a lead at all times across the estate, and on a short lead on the paths of the garden and Pleasure Ground Wood. Dogs are not allowed in the kitchen garden, castle rooms, Adam Tower or play area, but are welcome in the tearoom overflow seating and the courtyard outdoor seating.
